Artist’s statement
Vesta Deive was born in Klaipėda, Lithuania, in 2002 and now lives in Paris.
As a child growing up in a post-Soviet neighborhood in Klaipėda, Vesta was introspective and sensitive to her environment. In her work, she seeks to understand what lies beneath the surface - the ocean, the human mind, and the city. Her work draws attention to the sensitivity of the human body, mortality, and complexity.
Like Jung, Vesta documents her subconscious on canvas, embarking on a journey of life’s evolution. This journey begins with Liquid, during which she spends her days living like a nun in a monastery in Umbria, Italy. Isolated from distractions, she develops an obsession with nature and seeks to understand its underlying principles. Her work depicts primitive organisms that symbolize purity.
Working across acrylic, oil, mirror, chiffon, and reclaimed materials, her paintings become layered, archaeological works. Each imprint and mark is organized in relation to time and personal history, reflecting the evolution of life on Earth, humanity’s adaptation to technology, and the spirituality of organisms.
Her paintings reflect today’s environmental catastrophes, humanity’s neglect of nature, and its exploitation. This environment portrays humanity within a saturated media landscape, a polluted mind, and a distracted attention span. It examines the human condition in an overstimulated world.
At the age of 22, she began to travel solo across Europe, gaining exposure to different cultures and developing an independent inner world that is reflected in her art.
